As he discusses this question, he uncovers ways in which concept and language of rights imposes the individualistic and legalistic approach on other civilizations and ways of thinking. Brewster points out that a demand for a right is made to an authority which is deemed to have the ability (though not necessarily the intention) to grant the right. This automatically puts those claiming a right in a position of subservience to that authority. Such a situation is particularly poignant for those, like Indigenous peoples, for whom 'rights' are secondary to responsibilities and relationships, but who nevertheless find themselves using the rights language as the only way to communicate with an imperial or colonial legal system. He also notes that while this legal system may indeed grant a right - as in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights - that does not mean that the right will actually be fulfilled. The right to food, he says, is an empty bowl, which if it is filled, may be found to contain the products of an industrial system which provide no nourishment. In referring to this as a tyranny, Brewster intends to spark dialogue and debate about the concept of 'rights' and the best ways to achieve genuine justice and equity among people and the Creation we inhabit. The book includes discussion of: . The Individualism of Rights . The False Assumption of Universality . Rights and the State . Property Rights: Human and Corporate . Right to Food and the Empty Bowl . Farmers' and Plant Breeders' Rights . Land Rights . Right to Die A Death of One's Own . The Right to Intervene "In [Kneen's] eyes, all fights for rights are ultimately beholden to a narrow Western concept of human rights that feeds into today's globalized capitalism. The rights framework privileges the individual over the collective and leads us away from other notions, like responsibility and gratitude, which are central to many non-Western societies and provide, in his view, a better footing for social transformation. The rights framework also feeds into a more generalized proliferation of rights claims, which only favours corporations and the powerful. The global push of intellectual property rights, for example, is commodifying knowledge while strangling our capacity for collective work and creativity, whether we are farmers, writers, musicians or software developers." - Devlin Kuyek, Briarpatch "Author and long-time activist Brewster Kneen's The Tyranny of Rights is shocking at times in its striking examination of rights discourse, arguing that international human rights legislation often translates to very little in reality, given that global rights legislation or international law is rarely enforced. The book argues further that an obsession, both socially and legally, with individual rights can be isolating and dangerous for the collective well-being of society." - Aziz Choudry, HOUR, Montreal "Brewster Kneen's book the Tyranny of Rights ... is a worthy analysis of where our civilization is heading. He dissects the process that has ceded power to the corporate sector through a detailed examination of how the language of individual rights has been used on a global scale as a tool to manipulate others and serve the interests of the rich and powerful." - JoAnn Cook, Ottawa _____ Peter Garden Turning the Tide Bookstore 525 11th St. East Saskatoon, SK Treaty 6 Territory S7N 0G1 (306)955-3070 www.turning.ca -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Focusing on the personal experiences of four independent musicians, we come to understand their motivations and their struggles as they face a post-9/11 environment where dissent is silenced and media outlets either ignore or self-censor material before it's released. This film is the journey of Michael Franti, Fat Mike, Paris, and Anti-Flag who started their careers when corporate consolidation in the music industry began to make it virtually impossible for political artists to be heard in the mainstream. But these four artists became pioneers, setting an example for many to follow as they were forced to invent new and unique ways to sidestep and breakthrough every attempt to censor them. Through their music and message they have "enraged, enlightened and inspired" a whole new generation of activists around the world. The film is a collection of live performances, political rallies, music videos and uncensored commentaries from some of the most outspoken icons in the business - folk legend Pete Seeger, The Dixie Chicks, David Crosby, Steve Earle, Jello Biafra, Ani DiFranco, Wayne Kramer (MC5) and more. Sounds Like a Revolution offers a unique historical perspective behind the new wave of protest music sweeping America. With exclusive footage, the film follows Michael Franti from Bagdad to San Francisco as he challenges corporate media with his radical message, POWER TO THE PEACEFUL. From apathy to activism the film profiles NOFX lead singer Fat Mike as he converts his 'apathetic' fan base into the first punkrock lobby force. From the concert mosh pit to Congress, the film follows Anti-Flag as they take on the US Army's predatory recruiting practices. While Paris takes us into his revolutionary cyberworld of social activism. Sounds Like a Revolution is a testament to the power of indie artists everywhere who are committed to expressing dissent and telling the truth as they see it, whatever the consequences. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Escape Sports, One Yoga and Turning the Tide Bookstore and Video Rentals are very pleased to present the Saskatchewan premiere of the documentary Sounds Like a Revolution. As three local businesses who seek to promote environmental and social awareness through feeding the body and the mind, promoting a film that explores the connection between music and social change is a natural fit. The owners of all three of our businesses have a strong connection to conscious music and many of the artists featured in this film including Michael Franti (who practiced his asanas at One Yoga when he was in town in April 2010), Ani Difranco, and Rage Against the Machine to name a few. As sustainable small business people we also relate to the themes presented in this film of survival as independents forging our own path with a life-affirming vision for our communities in a world dominated by multinational corporations and big box retailers. We hope that the messages in this film inspire many who see it to take action for a better world. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Unlike the capitalist system, which centralizes power with a small elite, economic democracy entitles everyone to a voice and equal vote in their communities' economic and political decisions. Workplace and community democracy will replace capitalist (corporate) dictatorship. Engler proposes that working-class change will be based on workplace organizations, community mobilizations and democratic political action; on gains and reforms that improve living conditions while methodically replacing wealthholders' entitlement with human entitlement, capitalist ownership with community ownership and master-servant relations with workplace democracy. BOOK LAUNCH rumours of a moral.jpg Rumours of a Moral Economy by Christopher Lind Sunday, Sept 26 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm Lydia's Pub (Upstairs Loft) 650 Broadway Avenue Saskatoon, SK Facebook event Do economies have ethics? Bringing together the work of historians, economists, social theorists and ethicists, Christopher Lind explores the rise of the capitalist market system and its global spread, and details how and why the economy became separated from ethics. Lind convincingly argues that although economics and ethics are understood to be separate at the level of ideas, in practice, economies are deeply embedded in society, relationships and morality. Contrary to the dominant academic paradigm, economies are not autonomous from society or the state, as is always made clear in times of crisis - from the economic morality of the English peasant crowds to the financial bubble of 2008/9. Rumours of a Moral Economy argues that while many different economic arrangements may be thought of as morally acceptable, popular resistance demonstrates the boundaries of justice in terms of sustainability, sufficiency, solidarity and equity.
